Too bad it’s automatic. Only 44,000 miles for $12,000.

Edit for those who take things too literally.

Don’t let this become like the time an Oppo who shall not be named started calling people who drive/own automatic sedans (specifically Fiesta sedans) stupid. It’s pretty stupid to call someone stupid just for liking something you don’t like. Someone wanted that car exactly the way it is and it doesn’t make them a motherfucker. They weren’t sitting there thinking “Gee, I wonder what some random dude on the Internet will think of my car in a couple of years when I get rid of it.”

I felt the same way when I was looking for my E90. I’d see the add, then be like oh it says manual, and then look through the pictures, and then bam psych, MOTHERFUCKING DCT, THAT’S NOT A FUCKING MANUAL WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME. It was why I almost said fuck it and waited for the F82 to come out, so I could select the options myself.

Whenever there’s a nice unmolested, low mileage S4, it’s an automatic.

Nobody touches the automatics 99% of the time, haha. Mainly because that transmission ate torque converters.

There’s about a 60-40 ratio of automatics to manuals.

Kinja'd!!! Steve in Manhattan > jkm7680
05/23/2016 at 19:10

Kinja'd!!!1

Worldwide? Or in US America? SigOther makes fun of me because I peer in the windows of cars on the street to see whether it has a manual ... needless to say, my hit rate is rather low.

US, I’m talking specifically about the B5 S4. But I do that as well, hah.

Well, say someone gives you a car, or there’s something that’s so cheap you can’t say no, and it has an automatic ... do you judge that person? No, you do not. And some enthusiasts prefer paddles, or an automatic gearbox. Does that mean they can’t have fun in their car?

And if there’s a brown diesel wagon with an automatic, and one with a 6M, does that make the slushbox less Oppo, less Jalop? No, I don’t think so.

And when I bought a car when I got out of law school, I wanted a 5M Mustang GT convertible, but I could not get far enough from the clutch to stop my leg cramping. Bought a ‘97 SHO (auto only) and loved it.

Surprised at 60/40 ratio - would have thought it was more like 80/20. Wrong again!

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > Steve in Manhattan
05/23/2016 at 19:22

Kinja'd!!!1

It’s just an estimate, seeing that the ones that are kept up are usually the manual ones, while the auto ones tend to be parted out quicker.

Fair enough. And if I had to buy a car tomorrow, I’d have to get an automatic. SigOther cannot drive stick, and won’t let me teach her. And she won’t let me and my retired lifeguard buddy teach her to swim. I have met so many people from tropical islands who can’t swim.

I see what you did there, That Guy. I can get hung up on grammatical errors as well, but there is a big difference between someone who provides constructive feedback, and the person who points it out as if the author just killed their pet dog, or the person who uses grammar to invalidate another person’s argument.

1988 - needed to buy a Camry wagon for reasons I won’t bother to explain. LE trim level did not offer a manual, so I was consigned to the base model. There must have been ... 20 base wagons on that dealer’s lot? I recall that two were manuals, and a gray car (that I dislike) was preferable to a cherryish red car (that I detest) - bought the gray one for $14,800 plus tax and tags. That was a nice little car.

Kinja'd!!! Steve in Manhattan > jkm7680

And I should say (a tale I’ve told here before) when I put that ‘88 Camry wagon 5M on the market in preparation for going to law school in ‘94, it had around 68K on it, and it was worth, if you believe KBB, around $6,800 bucks, and that was what I asked. The phone rang fairly early in the morning (this was when you had to sell a car in the Washington Post). Hispanic landscaper called first - he said I’m coming over with 7 grand in cash in an hour. I got a few offers over 7 grand, but kept my word and sold the guy the car. New tires, rebuilt transmission (Toyota had a problem with 2nd gear in those, split the cost with them out of warranty). Had the clutch done since the transmission was out. Cloth seats, crank windows, cold A/C, and a recent alignment. And new plugs and wires - I did that. I think the guy got a good deal.

Not bad!

My mother managed to make a $1,000 or so profit off of some Toyota of some sort in the late 80's. Don’t know the exact story, but it was “totalled” by hail at one point.

Think I got a very good price for that wagon ... that I had to spend only 3 hours total dealing with the sale was a bonus.

Ah, its just like my Mother’s old car... Same color and everything (she called it Lilly), except hers was a manual, and had almost 200k miles on it. She had to trade it in because her multiple spinal fusion back surgery made it impossible for her to drive stick in traffic due to pain... She cried when she handed over they keys, but guys at the Mazda dealership gave her $7500 trade-in value on a new 2014 (this was a couple years ago) Mazda 3 Touring (auto). I will miss that car, and the searing yellow... Maybe I should tell my mom about this one... It is an auto...

I think she loved that car more than she loves her second son (me). God knows she spent more money on it than she ever did on me :p (replaced the radio several times oh, the joys of early integrated-security Blaupunkt units, turbos got done at 120k, timing, clutch, and of course B5 Quattro suspension... She could never get rid of the frond end squeaks no mayer how many times she lubed or replaced the bazillion ball-joints... But she shure loved that thing and drove it like it should be driven too..). She’s slowed down a bit now, and I’m not sure she'd be so overjoyed to have the maintenance costs of one of these back now that she's gotten used to the Mazda...

Haha, sounds like she treated her right. Turbos, timing and clutch as you probably know are the three things that go wrong the most.

But as a fun car to have on the side, you can’t beat one if that’s what you’re into. I’d say show it to her at least, but I’m heavily biased :P

No, she actually likes the Mazda, and its got navigation, which she never could remember how to use on her phone... I think she’s realized/decided that her driving style/ability no longer warrants a twin-turbo AWD German wallet-seeking-missile. Some of my earliest memories involve being strapped into my booster seat in the back of the '80 Subaru while we slid around and got air on the dirt back roads... It really took intent to get that gutless wonder moving like that ;)
